Sturt Bowling Club is a proud and iconic club whose rich history is the envy of most.
We are the third oldest bowling club in South Australia being founded in 1903 but importantly
the oldest club on its existing and only site at the south western end of Unley Oval on Trimmer Terrace, Unley.
In the Bowls SA Metropolitan Pennant competition, we currently field 3 sides on Saturdays and Wednesdays.
We are always healthily competitive and in the words of the club motto we "Never Ever Give Up".
The club has won 63 pennants (which includes 11 women's pennants).
In Division 1 or A grade, the club has been successful on 7 occasions claiming the A grade two rink championships of 1923 and 1927,
Division 1 Wednesdays in 1946 & 1965,
Division 1 Green Saturday pennant in 1968 and Division 1 Gold Saturday pennant & Division 1 Green Wednesday pennant in 1979.
The club was home to the 1947 Australian Open champion, Dr. Jack Petchell, whom our clubhouse is named after.
Amongst many honors, Petchell also won 4 State titles, 3 State champion of champions and was Sturt Bowling Club champion 9 times.
The club boasts an exceptional Night Owl program with over 200 people attending on Tuesdays and Thursdays between October and March.
It is the envy of all bowling clubs. Many transition to pennant bowls while still enjoying the more casual atmosphere of our Night Owls.
The club is also happy for anyone to walk off the street and have a try. Our members will make you feel welcome and help you get started.
You may eventually also like to avail yourself of our free coaching.
Our facilities are available for hire and you will find the rates very reasonable.
