Award for Funniest Photo-series at Sturt Bowling Club, 2025

It is with great pleasure we announce the joint winners of the unofficial Award for Funniest Photo-Series at Sturt Bowling Club, 2025: Victoria (Vicki) Kavanagh and Jonathan (Jono) Webster.

The humorous incident occurred at the formal opening to the season on 6 September, following presentations by the Mayor, Michael Hewitson AM, President Rocket and Club Coach Izzy.

Then Vicki and Jono - as the current Club Singles Champions - were asked to step forward and put down two bowls each, to open the season.

The crowd was the biggest ever at a season opening, and they were all standing very close to the action.

Jono rolled the jack, then Vicki's first bowl was a bit long and narrow. Understandable, thought the large crowd: it's hard bowling when you haven't warmed up and in front of so many people you know.

Jono then put his first bowl close to the jack. Predictable, thought the large crowd.

But the script was about to be changed. Stunningly, Vicki's second bowl Took the Jack Back and away from Jono's bowl.

The Crowd Erupted. Jono, the Man of Steel, who as a skip faces intense challenges on almost every end of a pennant game, was suddenly under extreme peer pressure.

Would Vicki, a comparative newcomer to pennants, be the Giant Killer?

The crowd went quiet as Jono stepped up to the mat to deliver his second and final bowl and, oh no, He Was Short. The Worst Result. Dead in the Water. Game Over.

Fortunately Jono took it all in good spirit, immediately shaking hands with Vicki while the crowd was at first in shock before applauding both bowlers.

Vicki still wonders whether Jono was being chivalrous in bowling short, but on the day the crowd had made up its mind: Vicki slayed Jono.
