Sturt tunes up for the pennant season

Preparations for the pennant season stepped up another level on Wednesday 16 September, when Sturt hosted neighbouring Millswood for the first external trial of the season.

More than 100 bowlers took to the greens in ideal conditions, with the only early challenge coming when 12 additional Millswood players arrived unexpectedly.

A little selector ingenuity ensured everyone got a game.

Chair of Selectors Graham Wood provides this report on a successful afternoon.

Graham Wood’s report:

Sturt Wednesday Pennant sides played their first external trial against Millswood on Wednesday the 16th of September.

Over 100 bowlers appeared on the Sturt greens for a 12:30 start.

Organising trial matches became a little more difficult when 12 extra Millswood players arrived at our club, but with a little selector magic between our clubs we managed to get every bowler into a trial.

Playing conditions were perfect. It was sunny, cool and there was a flukey wind that tested all bowlers across the afternoon.

All matches were 21 end fours, apart from one match which played 25 end triples.

The feedback from the day was positive. Our visitors enjoyed the condition of our greens. Although it is early in the season the greens had good speed and they ran true.

All Sturt bowlers benefitted from the run as we tune our sides for the competitive season ahead.

Next week we will prepare for a fixture against Walkerville on the 23rd of September.
