Sonia Matteucci's team of Maria Canala, Sue Kasprzak and Di Fullerton powered on

Despite the win, Alan Catterall, coach of Sturt II on Thursday 29 January, was drained after the game.

"It was challenging day but we got the win," was his summary.

"What could go wrong? Early start, game reduced to 18 ends, major club announcement beforehand, so no practice and no roll-up. Oh and it’s nearly 30 degrees.”

Immediately the team was under pressure:

"Janet Mullins' rink dropped a 6 early on and only won one end out of the first 8, Cheryl Saunders' rink dropped an 8 (yes, an 8) on the second end. And these have been my better rinks of late.

"So backs to the wall, dig deep and stay focussed."

Fortunately, Sonia Matteucci's rink steadied the ship:

"Sonia’s rink got off to flyer, so overall it didn't feel too bad. But our senior coach Peter Hughes was on the prowl, concerned.

"Eventually Janet’s team of Julie Short, Diana Frankcom and Wendy Adams got the mat and Julie immediately started playing to a full length. A 6 and then a 4 meant they were back in the game.

"Sonia’s team of Maria Canala, Sue Kasprzak and Di Fullerton powered on to eventually win rink of the day and give us some margin.

"Cheryl's rink fought back to keep their score respectable, but that 8 hurt…..

"In the end a memorable victory.

"Special mention to Janet’s rink who were seen in a team huddle after the game, celebrating their fight-back and their contribution to the team win."
