Following the canvassing of our Night Owls players and our club members and some door-knocking in the area, the Labor Party had reached its position around funding for our improvements.
Our club President, the day after returning from his overseas trip, took a call from Labor candidate for the seat of Unley, Alice Rolls, at around 4.30pm on Thursday afternoon, 29 January.
“Hi Rod, how’s the jetlag?” Rocket responded, “Yeah, it’s kicking in and I’m just about to leave the club.” To which Alice advised: “Well, by all means go home but please be back at the club by 6.15pm as we’ve got some big news to announce!”
So, Rocket did what he was told and sure enough, just before Night Owls began, we gathered everyone on A Green.
The Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Autism, Ms Emily Bourke, then took the microphone and simply said:
“A re-elected Malinauskas Government will contribute $1,050,000 toward upgrades to the Sturt Bowling Club.”
After much applause and the presentation of a marketing cheque, Emily, Alice, and the Redevelopment Project team including Jim Trenerry, Dave McVicar and Julie Bates retired to the bar to celebrate.
And, it must be said, both Emily and Alice displayed great prowess at downing a pint of beer on that very warm evening!
We thank the Labor Party for their commitment to our cause.
