So often at Sturt Bowling Club, someone starts bowling at Night Owls, gets the bug, and then progresses to pennants.
Not everybody also lives across the road from the club, had an extraordinary career helping people and likes driving fast boats.
Meet Jodie Semmler:
Jodie, when did you start bowling?
I started bowling at Night Owls about 2.5 years ago.
What first attracted you to bowls?
I hadn’t thought about bowls at all until a friend of mine (Tim Bright) was short on two players for his Night Owls team Green Moon, and he asked me to play.
How long have you been bowling for Green Moon at Night Owls?
2.5 seasons.
What do you enjoy about Night Owls?
It’s just across the road from my house so no worries about having a drink whilst playing bowls.
When did you start bowling in pennants?
The beginning of this season.
What do you like about bowling for Sturt in women’s pennants?
Although I have nothing to compare it with, I have found Sturt Bowling Club to be exceedingly friendly and helpful.
The women are always supporting and encouraging each other
Do you have any personal goals for your bowling?
Basically I want to become a steady and useful bowler.
I have a long way to go.
What did you enjoy about participating with other Sturt women in the recent Ladies Day Gala at Kapunda?
It was fun seeing everyone dressed up in 1920’s gear. The camaraderie of playing three games with the same girls was a highlight.
We also had a very pleasant dinner at the pub and stayed overnight in cabins.
Based on the photos, your delivery action is becoming more and more refined. Is this the result of coaching or practice or both?
As mentioned before I still have a long way to go. But to answer your question any improvement in my delivery action is the result of “tough love” coaching … and practice.
I understand you have a professional background in gynaecology/obstetrics and fertility. Can you please give a short summary and say what you enjoy or enjoyed about it?
After about a billion years of study I became a RANZCOG fellow - the Australian College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology - in January 2001.
I spent the next 25 years mostly running two practices, one in general gynaecological surgery and the other in fertility/IVF.
I enjoyed operating (fixing people) and helping people to have a family.
Are there any personal interests you can share with us? Eg favourite pastimes; favourite music; hobbies/interests?
Personal interests include, in no particular order, hiking, crocheting and knitting for charity, reading and driving fast boats.
