The Sturt ‘never give up’ spirit kicked in and we fought back but Blackwood prevailed

Ralph Hounslow, team leader of Sturt IV for the elimination final game against Blackwood IV at Beaumont on Saturday 7 March 2026 said it was "perfect weather and the greens were good".

"We had the better of Blackwood twice during the season, although the results were close on both occasions.

"Message for the day was that we had to be on our game, with every bowl being significant."

It was an arm wrestle all day, said Ralph:

"Blackwood got off to a good start on all rinks with a lead of 14 after 5 ends.

"The Sturt ‘never give up’ spirit kicked in and we fought back to a lead of 6 up after 12 ends. The battle was then on for the remainder of the game.

"Blackwood were able to grab a couple of 4s, with the arm wrestle coming down to the very last end where a steady Blackwood prevailed for a 46-51 win. "

For Ralph, the highlights of the day were:

"Derrick Witt’s rink of Jo Kirby, Lyn Witt and Jackie Hammond fighting the battle all day.

"Some accurate bowling on Phil Scardigno’s rink of Richard Bolton, Stewart Allan and David Beales.

"A solid 21-11 win on my rink of Robb Nuus, Alan King and Brian Dunstall.

"And Alan King bowling the lights out with his shiny new bowls."

Ralph added that "all players should feel some pride for the accomplishments of the season.
Well played Sturt IV.
