Jackie Hammond values Champion of Champions experience

Last week Jacqueline (Jackie) Hammond represented Sturt Bowling Club at the Bowls SA Women's Champion of Champions tournament.

Jackie is a long-standing icon of the club who always performs with grace, style and determination.

On this particular occasion her opponent was someone who ended up in the final eight for the competition, so it was a tough assignment.

Plus, her opponent used the tactic of short ends on a fast green that Jackie says she learnt from.

Jackie says she learnt valuable lessons from the experience and is now committed to practicing the specific skill of how to bowl short ends on fast greens in windy conditions.

Jackie's report

"On the 18th of April 2026 I played in the Champions of Champions tournament at the Marion Bowling Club.

"The temperature was in the mid 20s with a breeze, and my opponent was Kylie Day from the Saddleworth Bowling Club.

"We played on grass and I found it to be very fast on the day.

"Kylie won the toss and put the mat right up and so I had a few gutter bowls to start with.

"Kylie led and I was playing catch-up."

Key learning

"I need a lot more practice with the mat up on a very fast green because I bowled too long most of the time and lost the match 11/21.

"Kylie made it to the last round of 8.

"The Championship was won by Cathryn Greenslade from the Riverton Bowling Club."
