Cheryl & Brett and the two Steves lead our Over 60's State Pairs

This week eight pairs of Sturt players participated in the State Over 60's Pairs Carnival, with Cheryl Saunders and Brett Lymn doing very well, reaching the final 8 of the Mixed Pairs event.

Next best were Steve van der Veen and Stephen Jones who reached the last 16 of the Men's Over 60's Pairs.

Cheryl said: "We had a good convincing win in the first finals game (Final 16), up by 7, but we lost by 8 in the second game (Final 8).

"We played well with Brett's lovely draw bowling and me as skip.

"We lost to a Modbury Premier League player and his wife - a Division 2 Saturday player - so we did well to have them worried for a while.

"We felt pretty tired: Brett says we bowled 225 bowls in 2 days - similar to 5 pennant games.

"(Alan) Specky was there to see our winning game so that was great."

Steve van der Veen and Stephen Jones did well to reach the final 16 of the Men's Over 60's Pairs, only to be narrowly defeated 12-14.

Other results

Other Sturt combinations to participate were as follows:

Tom Morgan and John Blue won two of their first three games in the Men's Over 60's Pairs at Playford Bowling Club, losing one game by just one shot.

Cheryl Saunders and Margie Haines had three tough games in the Women's Over 60's Pairs at Kensington Marryatville, losing one game by just three shots.

Alan Catterall and Margie Haines won one game and lost two in the Over 60's Mixed Pairs, with one of their losses by one shot.

Steve van der Veen and Diana Frankcom won one and lost two.

Tom Morgan and Terry Morgan lost their three games, but one was by only two shots, 16-18.

Sonia Matteucci and Stephen Jones won one game and lost two.

Feedback

There were common themes in the feedback from various Sturt players:

One: it was a learning experience to play against top players from other clubs.

Two: we are proud to have competed and, in some cases, won games.

Three: while the carnival is exciting, the format of three games a day is demanding.

Sonia commented that, exhausted from her Kangaroo Island bowls trip and from the first day of the Over 60's Mixed Pairs, "If I had to play again today - 3x15 ends - I think I would have collapsed."
