Sturt I continued its impressive start to the season with a 14–shot win over Marion II at home, on Saturday 24 October.
Club Coach and Team Leader Izzy Trenorden was pleased with the result, particularly in slow and tricky conditions, but believes the side is still finding its feet and has plenty of improvement ahead.
After three rounds, Sturt I has won nine of its 12 rinks.
Report from Team Leader Izzy Trenorden
Another good win by the crew, but I feel like we’re still just warming up!
Taking 14 points against what I assume will be a finals-making side in slow and tricky conditions is always a good feeling.
There was one key message at the start of the game, “trail the jack”, with the idea of eliminating anything short (like every week, but this week especially with a slower deck).
Minimal warm-up, rain and uncertainty about when it would stop meant the first five ends were the most critical.
Jack’s (Trenorden) rink certainly went and did that and never slowed down!
My rink was quick to start too and Jono (Webster) was very good at trailing jacks and landing opposition bowls, which had a big impact on the scoreboard.
Dan Flanagan, in his second outing for the club, was in a tight fight all day but from end 14 that rink didn’t look like losing.
Alex’s (Smith) rink struggled to adjust to the wet conditions early and then the changing green. However, two weeks in a row they gave themselves another chance at taking 2 points, but probably left their run home 2-3 ends late.
Overall, 14 points, and 9 rinks out of 12 for the three games this season is a really good start for us.
I think we’re all still finding our feet a little so far this year, except Jack (Trenorden), Richard (Weeks), Rach(el Krebbekx) and Kim (Keane) who have found early form.
Another big challenge this week against Toorak Burnside, a side that’s been around the mark for many years and has added depth.
Looking forward to finding our best form over the coming weeks!
