Braveheart steps out for Sturt

During the dramatic preliminary final against Blackwood on Saturday 14 March, all eyes were on skip Alex Smith, who came out of the locker wearing blue war paint.

Alex said he attracted some feedback from his team-mates and the crowd: "Lots of Braveheart references from others on the day, and some concern that I would get an uneven sunburn."

He said he "started doing it a few years ago on and off".

"Just a little extra bit of preparation for finals."

Some people write self-messages in biro on the back of their hand, but Alex prefers seeing his face paint reflected in the windows at the club:

"Only impact on my play is when I am looking in a window its just a reminder that it is finals and to take an extra second to focus on the job at hand."

There's a bit more to this story.

On Saturday, some of the other very funny men at Sturt - Stephen Jones and Deane Pye - were visibly thrown by Alex's stunning initiative.

Alex left it to almost the end of the season to trump them.

In the photos below, Stephen can be seen down-hearted and frustrated during the game and Deano took out his frustration on a paper cup.
