The winter colour watch

With less than half the Winter Bowls season remaining, competition for the highly prestigious, completely unofficial Brightest Bowler Award is intensifying.

The secret judges have no qualifications in fashion, colour coordination or haute couture, but that has never stood in the way of this award.

Under grey winter skies on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, Bronwyn Perry immediately caught the eye in a striking red top and matching beanie.

Cathy Stevens also made a strong statement in a light-blue jacket, while Robert Minson's bold blue top ensured he was never difficult to spot.

Other commendable contenders included Wyatt Groth in his green-and-white hoops and Stew Adams, whose red-and-black check shirt made a confident bid for selection.

The newly-popular Sturt hoodie also had its supporters. Ingrid Olsen, Jackie Hammond, Lesley Dunstall and Richard Weeks all demonstrated that those distinctive light-blue shoulder panels are more noticeable than they first appear.

Meanwhile, Deane Pye continued his determined campaign with a vivid flash of red beneath his outer layer, while Darrin Smith cleverly combined his dark Millswood top with a fiery red, black and white beanie.

If the judges ever introduce a companion award for Most Tastefully Understated, Victoria Kavanagh, Sandra Gray and Joanne Kirby would surely be among the favourites.

Sadly, every competition has its disappointments.

Bobby Rutten confessed to recycling the same vertically striped top that served him so well in last year's campaign, admitting it was his only fashion trick.
