One of the delights of Winter Bowls is how quickly the mood can change.
Within a few minutes, the atmosphere can swing from laughter to fierce concentration, from coaching to competition, and from quiet catch-ups to colourful characters demanding the camera's attention.
Some players seem able to move effortlessly between laughter, deep concentration and friendly rivalry within the space of a minute.
At Winter Bowls on Saturday 18 July 2026, Ralph Hounslow, Ed Parker, Tom Morgan, Toby Carter, Libby Lock, Cathy Stevens and Maria Canala all featured in that category.
Another hallmark of Winter Bowls is the way experienced players are often paired with newer bowlers, creating plenty of opportunities to pass on tips and encouragement.
Kim Keane, Jonathan Webster, Alex Smith, Paul Clohesy, Russell Moore, Jack and Izzy Trenorden were among those happily sharing their experience.
This year Winter Bowls has also featured many comebacks from health challenges. On Saturday, it was wonderful to see Janine Skurray back on the green after her recent surgery.
The unofficial Brightest Bowler honours went to Wendy Rutten in her gold cap and white top and Jonathan Webster in his striking blue Rip Curl top.
It was great to welcome back from overseas the ever-entertaining Ed Parker, who swapped the excitement of a string of FIFA World Cup matches for the friendly rivalry of Winter Bowls at Sturt Bowling Club.
Off the green, it was good to see former chair of selectors Gerry Dillon catching up with fellow members after his lengthy stint in one of the club's most challenging volunteer positions.
